Born in New Jersey, I grew up in Liberia, West Africa – a place where my passion for hair began. By the age of ten, I began to braid and style everyone’s hair – both family and friends. When I decided to turn this practice into a career, I moved to New York and began my journey in becoming the best. I spent five years training under many of New York best hair artist. During this time I continued to build both my client book and experience outside the salon by doing hair at NY Fashion Week for shows like Stella McCartney, Oscar de la Renta, Mugler, and Carolina Herrera. With all these experiences, under great masters of hair – I made the difficult decision to gain more independence and began to work as an independent stylist. Looking to advance my skills I decided to dive deeper into the curly world. In no time I became a senior stylist at the prestigious devachan salon both in SoHo and UWS. Knowing that I wanted to give my clients more, I made the move to open Candace Witherspoon salon. A safe space where all curl textures will be treated with love and care. I have pursued my education at DevaCurl Academy of New York, L’Oréal Academy, Ouidad Academy, and Aveda Institute. My work have been published in Allure, Instyle, Bustle, Marie Claire, New York Post, NY Times, Refinery 29, Dove | Mic, Self Magazine, Oprah Magazine, The Atlantic and Byrdie.

The seed was planted early on, going to salon appointments in Harlem with my mother, mesmerized by the transformations taking place around me. I fell in love with the culture, the fumes, the stories, the empowerment of all that walked in and out of the salon. 7 years into my career, a hair loss struggle caused me to reshape my relationship with hair. Through that experience I developed a newfound confidence in curls. I strengthened my passions by working behind the chair. I’m dedicated to helping all that sit in my chair embrace their unique curl pattern. With personalized cuts, products, and routines, we swap stories, share tips, and revel in the beauty of being unapologetically ourselves.

Chereen Monet is a seasoned colorist with over 15 years of experience working in NYC, where she mastered her craft and continues to advance her education. Specializing in balayage, corrective color, and transformational color, Chereen is adept at working with all curly hair textures. Trained under Leysa Carrillo and certified as a Forever Curls Academy Master Colorist, Chereen blends her extensive expertise with a passion for learning. Her work is inspired by art, travels and diverse cultures, ensuring that each client receives a personalized, stunning look that highlights their individuality.
